How Dietitians Support Your GLP-1 Journey

If you’re using a GLP-1 medication, nutrition support is key. Registered Dietitian Judy Chodirker, RD, MHSc, shares why partnering with a dietitian can make all the difference for women to stay nourished, feel their best and reach their goals.

A client the other day told me, “I don’t understand why it’s not mandatory for everybody on a GLP-1 to see a dietitian.”  It occurred to me, for the first time, how important a dietitian is to those embarking on GLP-1 medications.  There’s no better time to set yourself up for success, improve eating habits and develop a healthy relationship with food!

GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®) have been making headlines for their effectiveness in helping people lose weight and manage conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes. These medications can help by slowing digestion, reducing appetite, and  regulating blood sugar. For many, they can be a game changer.

Taking a GLP-1 on its own doesn’t guarantee long-term results, but by coordinating nutrition and eating habits appropriately, you can set yourself up for success.  Partnering with a Registered Dietitian can make all the difference.

Building Healthy habits

1. Making Sure You Meet Nutritional Needs

One of the most common effects of GLP-1 medications is a reduced appetite.  This is achieved by decreasing hunger signals in the brain and slowing digestion, which together help you feel fuller with smaller portions and stay satisfied between meals.

While this may help with weight loss, it also increases the risk of eating too little or missing out on important nutrients. If you’re skipping meals, eating very small portions, or relying on convenience foods, you might not be meeting your body’s needs for protein, vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Over time, this can affect your energy, muscle strength, and even bone health.

2. Preventing Digestive Discomfort

Nausea, constipation, and bloating are common when starting or increasing the dose of a GLP-1. These side effects can sometimes make eating feel stressful.

Dietitian’s can suggest practical strategies to reduce discomfort, such as:
  • Choosing foods that are easier to digest
  • Adjusting portion sizes and timing of meals and snacks
  • Increasing fibre and fluids

The goal is to make food enjoyable again, rather than something you dread.

3. Building Long-Term Healthy Habits

GLP-1 medications are most effective when paired with lasting lifestyle changes. Without them, weight regain is likely if the medication is stopped.

A dietitian can help you:
  • Develop a healthy, balanced eating pattern that works for your lifestyle
  • Create a positive relationship with food and find strategies to deal with emotional eating
  • Improve meal planning and cooking skills without overthinking it
  • Build confidence around food choices, whether eating at home, at work, or at restaurants for now or in the future

Building long term healthy habits and enjoying life

Think of it this way: the medication helps you feel satisfied sooner, but a dietitian helps you learn what to put on the plate and how to sustain those choices long term.

4. Supporting Your Unique Health Needs

Nutrition advice is not one-size-fits-all. You may have other health conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol or digestive issues, that require tailored nutrition strategies.

A dietitian works with you and your healthcare team to make sure your eating plan supports your overall health, not just weight loss. That means keeping blood sugar stable, protecting heart health, and ensuring you’re nourished.

Final Thoughts

Changing eating habits is challenging. Many women taking GLP-1 medications have a history of yo-yo dieting or feeling frustrated with food.

Choosing to eat healthy

GLP-1 medications are a powerful tool, but they aren’t a magic solution. Partnering with a Dietitian ensures you’re not just eating less, but eating smarter. Together, you can create a plan that fits your lifestyle, supports your health goals, and sets you up for lasting success.
